How do you repair or replace window glass in a vehicle door?

There are several basic steps to repairing door glass:

  • The inner door panel comes off.
  • The mounting hardware is extracted.
  • New glass is shimmied into place.
  • Everything is bolted back together.

There are a few additional steps for vehicles with power windows, including unhooking, the quick-disconnect plug that delivers power to and from the window switches and attaching the new glass panel to the regulator.

My window makes a buzzing noise and it does not roll up or down.

Two possibilities:

  • The door glass brackets that mount on the regulator could be broken or loose.
  • Your regulator has gone bad and needs replacing.

In both cases, contact Low Budget Auto Glass for Diagnostic and service.

What is a regulator?

It is a mechanism located inside your door panel that moves your window upward or downward powered by electric motor.

I can hear the motor running just fine.

Yes, but it could be the door glass brackets that are broken and or not properly secured on the regulator. On the other hand, the regulator itself, which contains several parts such as cables, spur gears and worm gears, may have been damaged.
